Arthur Nauzyciel offers a subversive reading of La Dame aux camélias by Alexandre Dumas fils, commonly known as Camille in English, in which he explores the relationship between power and the human body, weaving together the novel and the play with cinema in a continuation of his work on L’Empire des lumières (The Empire of Light), presented last season at the TNB.
It is a story of true love, that of a young bourgeois Armand Duval, fascinated by the beauty of Marguerite Gautier, courtesan.
It is a story haunted by what has been, what could have been. In this ambiguous space between truth and lies, reality and illusion, Arthur Nauzyciel brings forward the oppression and submission between men and women, in a bourgeois society that has invented a diabolical machine for its own pleasure and amusement, the commodification of the human body and its simultaneous moralization.
